Los Cabos at a Glance
Los Cabos (or The Capes, in English) is the name of the two cities that conform this tourist destination. San José del Cabo is the oldest settlement and is the seat of the government of the municipality of Los Cabos, making it the administrative center of both cities. The geographical location is in the state of the Baja California Sur peninsula and is considered the highest density settlement in the state that has the lowest population density in all of Mexico.

Brief overview of the area's history
The earliest settlements appeared in the mid-to-late 1500s, when this portion of Mexico was found during Hernán Cortés exploration journeys following the defeat of the Mexica in 1521. San Jose was the site of the first mission established by catholic missionaries, which resulted in the founding of The Misiones that extended all the way to the Upper California.
On the other of town San Lucas was famous for canned tuna and after WWII, many baby boomers came down to Cabo to fish. The place was so famous for its amazing scenery and stunning fishing among some Hollywood movie stars, business owners, and even presidents, that they built the first hotels and invited guests to marvel at this secluded paradise!

May and June are transition months as it is not as crowded and the summer storms are just a couple of months away, the ocean temperature is still amazing and the sky is cloudless.
July and August are summer months, which are not as full, but temperatures start to rise and you might get some rainy or cloudy days. Although the official Pacific hurricane season starts in Mexico mid-May, in this region it will start in mid-July depending on El Niño or La Niña, and most tropical storms pass close to the peninsula.
Most of the dry season in Los Cabos has monochromatic scenery, which looks incredible when the desert blends with the ocean, with the cactuses being the only vegetation that doesn’t shed its leaves.
September, October, and November are also nice months for a vacation, just remember that this is the rainy season.
By mid-October, the ocean currents begin to change and you will notice the ocean becomes cooler and you will start to feel the change in the air. Migrating birds start to adopt the San Jose estuary as home and in a couple of weeks you will start to see the first humpback whales on the way to their sanctuaries in the different lagoons where they have their young calves. Officially, the whale watching season starts from mid-December to mid-April and that is a spectacular show that you can’t miss, more if you visit Magdalena lagoon or Ojo de Liebre, where you will be able to interact with them and touch them if you are lucky and brave enough. An experience you will never forget.

Right next to the San José Estuary and wildlife reserve are the Wirikuta Desert Botanical Gardens, a variety of cacti and succulents from around the world covering five hectares of the most exceptional plant collection. With more than a million plants arranged in different ways, and a superb sculptural space with works by Manuel Felguérez, José Luis Cuevas, and Gabriel Macotela. They also present on Wednesday nights a Huichol production that should not be missed.
Getting to either of the two terminals at the San José International Airport is actually a very simple process, you will retrieve your luggage and then go through customs, this can be a quick procedure during the low season. During the high season it may take longer as the flights arrive simultaneously and the number of passengers increases, be patient and remember not to bring anything in your luggage that could cause you problems, believe me it happens!

As you exit customs, you will meet a timeshare selling team, if you are contemplating acquiring one, then choose from the different options you will find, if not just follow the exit route.
At terminal number one after exiting customs, turn right and continue to the second exit where you will find the company representative who will provide you with hotel transportation. If you arrive on your own, turn left and go through the gates where you will find taxi services that will take you to town, set the transportation fee before you get into the van.
In terminal number two, you will pass the timeshare sales area and exit to another area within the airport, turn left and continue outside where you will find transport representatives with company signs. Taxi services are also offered in that area.
Tourism is the main activity in Los Cabos, and it is a vital part of the local economy. The government spends a significant amount of money to keep the destination safe. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or displaying large amounts of cash in public places while exploring the city. Keep your valuables in a safe place to avoid being a victim of pickpockets, and as in any other part of the world, women traveling alone should avoid staying out late at bars and clubs as much as possible. Be aware of your surroundings and take extreme precautions if you decide to venture outside of the tourist areas. Common sense and caution are necessary wherever you go.
Be aware of the season in which you will visit the Baja to avoid bad weather due to tropical storms or hurricanes.
Book your activities in advance to avoid surprises or hidden costs.
If you are flying down to Baja for a vacation, keep the following in mind: Los Cabos is essentially two towns connected by a tourism corridor twenty miles apart. Things may appear closer as the destination has grown and hotels have opened, but don’t be fooled – you will need transportation to get around.
Read More Taxis If driving is not for you while vacationing, Taxis are a convenient option, but can be pricey as distances are long from San Lucas to San Jose. Short trips around town are inexpensive, but be sure to ask the driver about the taxi fare before taking the service. If you are planning a longer trip, an excursion or private transfers for a night out, transport companies will offer all kinds of vehicles, and some will include a guide and water bottles. Bus service Another more economical option to move from San Jose to San Lucas, or if you wish to go snorkeling in Santa Maria or Chileno bay, are buses. These cover the all-around trip from the San Jose airport all the way to San Lucas downtown, and usually work in 25-to-30 minute intervals. They provide clean, good service, and most are air conditioned. If you tell the driver to leave you at a certain point, most of them will do it gladly. Uber service As of October 2018, Uber services are provided in Los Cabos so if you have the app, the service operates in town.
In Los Cabos and Baja, you will find all of the major international car-rental agencies, as well as some local companies; the offer is the same in most of them, with clean and new cars. The difference will be in the price, so plan ahead of time to find better prices and the model you want. Consider full insurance, including personal liability, when renting a car; during peak season some agencies may run out of vehicles.
Purchasing gas in and around Los Cabos is simple, as there are several gas stations in town, along the tourism corridor, and on the roads connecting La Paz and the East Cape. The most common brand is PEMEX, which is a state-owned company; prices are posted in pesos per liter, so keep that in mind; most gas stations accept cash or credit card.

A stunning new development is being constructed on the spot, so just be aware that you might encounter some machinery working there.
It is an amazing white sand beach with zaphire blue waters, a bit isolated, but it helps enjoy the various coves that form the area. It is all surrounded by gorgeous rock formations and reefs which make this a perfect spot for snorkeling, just consider the ocean conditions when you visit, as it can get rough and has a strong currents.
There are no facilities in the area, so take everything you will need with you.

El Chileno

This is one of the nicest spots to relax and spend a lovely day in Cabo, as it is located in San Jose del Cabo and is bordered by million dollar residences and a Jack Nicklaus golf course.
To get to Palmilla Beach, use the road that leads to the resort and turn left along the gravel path a few meters from the hotel entrance.

Acapulquito

Zippers, La Roca, and El Viejito are three reef breaks that are suitable for all levels of surfers, from beginners to intermediate and advanced.
You can snorkel during the winter when the waves are gentler, and Costa Azul is one of the greatest beaches in town for strolling.

This length of beach is part of the San Jose del Cabo estuary; this freshwater lagoon, which is nourished by subsurface aquifers in this barren section of the Baja Peninsula, spans 3150.59 acres of land. The temperature in the area is lowered by nearly four degrees Celsius as a result of this. It was previously the intended stop for the Spanish fleet traveling between Spain and the Philippines on the Manila Galleons route.
It is a treat to visit during the bird migration season, as it is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna.

La Playita
It is one of Los Cabos' newest beaches, located in the Pueblo de la Playita, just five minutes from San Jose del Cabo via the bridge that connects El Estero and the small town. Read More
The beach was formed when the Marina Puerto Los Cabos was built, and it's one of the safest in the area, with a demarcated section, very calm waters, and the El Ganzo beach club and restaurant right on site, where you can enjoy a magnificent lunch while taking in the sights.

Wirikuta Botanical Garden
The Baja California peninsula is the longest in the world, located in the northwestern part of Mexico, separating the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. The peninsula extends 1,247 km, from 40 km in its narrowest part to 320 km in its widest part. Most of the peninsula is semidesert and xeric shrubland, Los Cabos has several ecoregions such as the subtropical coniferous forest region in the Sierra de la Laguna mountains that include oak-pine forests. The dry tropical climate of the lowlands in places like Los Cabos offers visitors to the area the opportunity to admire different species of cacti endemic to the region. For this activity, we suggest you visit the “Wirikuta Botanical Garden”, which bears the name of the sacred desert of the “Wixárika” or Huichol Indians. Here you can discover over 1500 different species of cacti, palms, succulents, and magueys or enjoy the magnificent Huichol Shows that are presented.

Ride a camel on Migriño beach or in the El Tule area and spend the time of your life with these noisy giants, experience snorkeling at some of the best beaches in Cabos, and admire marine life so splendid that Jacques Cousteau named it the world’s aquarium. You can swim with sea lions or with huge whale sharks, something you will never forget. If you prefer to dive, take a tour to Cabo Pulmo, the only marine sanctuary in Mexico in these latitudes, swim with dolphins in three world-class facilities or have a romantic trip on a sunset catamaran or a grand dinner cruise and enjoy the entertainment on board.

Surf Spots
There are numerous surf places in Baja that appeal to inexperienced, seasoned, and elite surfers. Here’s a quick rundown and surf forecast of some of the best areas to begin your dawn patrol.
Left point break can sometimes get tricky. You will find this break just east of Cabo San Lucas off Highway 1. Monuments can offer decent size breaks most of the time and when everything else is dead flat.
Nearest break to San Jose del Cabo. The beach is located right in front of the Costa Azul bridge offering a fast right break and is the site of numerous surf competitions, mostly during the month of June.
The reef structure creates a long break when the size is there, but you must do your dawn patrol if you want to have a nice surf as it can get quite crowded, the best part is that during summer you can surf there from 6am until 7 pm easy!
Just on the side of the famous Zippers restaurant in San Jose del Cabo, right breaking swell that offers great surf time for beginners as well as experienced surfers.
La Roca is considered another great spot along the Costa Azul shore: a right break, this one forms off a rock bank. If you are lucky the ride can be over one hundred yards. Three-to-four foot light swells most of the time but during rainy season, waves can be 6-10 feet during the right swell.
Located just on the side of what used to be the Presidente Intercontinental Hotel at the north end of Hotel Boulevard in San Jose del Cabo, then a short walk out onto the beach and you are there! Being a sandbar break it can get better after a storm has increased the sandbar. You will have the option of left and right breaks that turn to double overhead. Just be quite careful of the shore break at low tide.
You will find this spot just on the side of Chileno Bay in the tourism corridor. This is a strong break that goes both ways and is not recommended for beginners. Leave that one to the experts. During wintertime, currents change and the surfing spots do as well, so here are two of the most recommended ones for that time of the year.
A very good reef break a few miles south of Todos Santos, a consistent break on the reef is probably its best attribute, but beware as the reef is covered with sea urchins and that will ruin anyone’s day. A whole day with a nice place to eat, have a beer and enjoy the Baja.
Considered one of the best breaks on the Pacific side, it is the most well known and most crowded. Lots of space to surf, as it is a right point break when the swell runs right, and a good beach break most of the time. Located a few minutes before arriving at Todos Santos on Highway 19.
Sport fishing is one of the most popular sports in Los Cabos, and the variety is so diverse that you can find any style of boat, in any size, at a range of rates. Your fishing opportunities will vary depending on the season, but one thing is certain: this is the destination to fish.
“The Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament” and the “Los Cabos Billfish Tournament”, both take place in October. Also other tournaments are held in the East Cape throughout the summer months, and the fish to catch is Wahoo! Read More
Because Los Cabos is a pelagic location, there are many species to be found, including Dorado, Tuna, and Roosterfish, which are among the most sought for, aside from the black, blue, or striped marlin.

Cabo Real Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that opened to the public in 1994 just in front of the Melia Cabo Real Resort. It’s a scenic and challenging golf course that’s usually played downwind on the uphill holes and on some it will vary due to the ocean winds.
Host of two PGA Senior events it is a magnificent example of a challenging, yet amazing, course that will demand your best when you play it.
Part of a 2800-acre resort and residential project, with a stunning beachfront area, and enchanted backdrop of the magical Sierra de la Laguna mountains, part of the course drops downhill a few meters away from the ocean, the incredible Ventanas al Paraiso exclusive resort and villas. Located in a 2000-acre master-planned resort community, this 27-hole golf resort is a joined design by two of the biggest names in the history of the sport, Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus.
All three courses are championship-caliber layouts, with the majestic views of the Sea of Cortez and guarded in the background by the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range.
The Norman Course is a Sandbelt classic 3590-yard par 36 that takes players on a 400-foot elevation ride, offering them amazing views and the majestic design of the 7th hole.
The Nicklaus I course is a 3758-yard par 36 signature design masterpiece, beginning in the foothills it gives players the view of the San Jose del Cabo Valley, with its original nine’s featuring fairways, greens, and bunkers that blend with the Baja landscape.

Luxury is the standard in town as you will find major elite brands in Puerto Paraiso Mall and Luxury Avenue in the Marina boulevard, or in boutiques that center around San Lucas main square area close to the museum. Arts and crafts, markets, jewelry stores, or souvenir shops are located all around the Marina boulevard and the main street, so you can’t miss them. There you will find that gift for a friend or piece of Huichol art that will look amazing in that special part of your home, to remind you of your trip to Baja. Bars and restaurants are all around the shopping avenue if you need time to savour some Mexican treats, rest, refresh, and reload! In San Jose, shopping is centered around the main square and the avenue coming from the tourism boulevard, parking is scarce so take that into consideration if you are driving or set a pickup place with your driver if you arrive on a private transport.
